Prop 22-3 in Michigan establishes rights to abortion and kills the law that the courts put on hold.

Even if this is all you vote for... please cast a ballot in favor of proper abortion rights for all

The FCC is still accepting letters from the general public about the next generation of Starlink satellites. They are asking for 30,000 of them, and they are 10x as big as the current Starlink satellites. This will DESTROY the night sky.

Very clear instructions on how to write and submit your letter are posted on Prof. Andy Lawrence's website here: andyxlastro.me/losing-the-sky-

Please submit a letter! Even if it's really short!

anti-semitism, witches

Let's be conscientious with what kind of images of scary things we spread this Halloween, so we can all have a good time. We can do witches without anti-semitism 👍

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.

I'm an astronomer, so one way I am working on reconcilation is to learn a bit more about Indigenous astronomy, and (carefully and respectfully) start teaching parts of it to my students, because this is really important for all Canadians to learn, whether or not they are Indigenous.

Here are a few resources I've been using to learn:

Imagine you have a movie with a fitting subtitle file, but it's the wrong language. So you download subtitles in the right language ... but find they're misaligned to your movie file. Or imagine that you would like to learn a language by watching foreign movies with subtitles, but your vocabulary isn't great, and you would prefer to have subtitles both in a language you know *and* the language you're learning.

About 9 years ago I wrote a browser-based tool (which runs locally entirely!) called "dualtitles" which provides a convenient interface for facilitating these usecases (load subtitles, align them, export them). As it apparently broke some time ago (due to browser API changes) I now refurbished it and brought it back to mint condition. Enjoy. (⌒‿⌒)

Hey, so like

Energy prices per unit in the UK are going to rise by 27% on average on the 1st Oct, so today or tomorrow might be a really good time to submit a meter reading. itv.com/news/2022-09-29/househ "If people don't submit their meter reading before the unit price increase, providers will base your next bill on the current price of energy, after the October price hike."

The call volumes are expected to be pretty high too, so do it online if you can

You know you can help fund civilian rescue ships in the Mediterranean, right? Since our European government is trying to kill people every day.

Italian government especially hates those ships and constantly gets in their way. Like they blocked a ship recently, ignoring court rulings, because they rescued too many people and things like that. It's going to get worse after the election.

Sea-Watch is preparing another ship and they are not the only ones out there.

"but what we mean isn't that it can't be translated, just that it's not like, word for word"

yeah but that's just like, words?? no word corresponds word by word to another language. word-level glossing isn't translation. like even the simplest words, do you think "cat" correspond to "gato"? yeah sure your pet cat is a "gato", but jaguars, lions and tigers are all cats and none of them are gatos. or nekos, for that matter. a sexy boyfriend is a gato but not a cat; an annoying bf can be cattish, but not gateiro, though one can sneak neko to feign one's real intentions, but that's neko-kaburi, rather than being nekoppoi; a gato can also be an improvised hack to steal energy or cable TV, while a neko can be a gay bottom, or if you burn your tongue easily you have a neko tongue, but no one will point out you have a cat tongue, nor a gato tongue, and so forth.

if that's the criterion then all words are untranslatable. of course that's not what translation is so the notion is nonsense. the so-called untranslatable words are just regular words laced with sparkling exoticism

One of the standard explanations for why some are so conspiratorial-minded, why some see the world as one big X-file, one big Q-drop, is that “they want and expect order, and their brain won’t let them believe that there’s chaos and that sometimes bad things just happen”. Sure. But a much simpler way to think of it is that we often conflate evolved behavior with deliberately planned behavior.

wanting to remind everyone since the seasons are changing about the discourse from like a couple years ago where we figured out that saying "spooky" is racist. there's searchable articles written on this with detailed history if you need the reciepts or whatever. just say "scary season" or "halloween" instead of a word that harms our friends on here.
