Has federating with changed your Mastodon experience? Asking from a server that blocks it.

@phonner Personally, not much, I don't think. I think I've interacted with a few people from threads and might even be following some. However, I don't really take much notice of what server they're on, and only really use my home timeline.

@phonner no, and I'm not sure if it's blocked from my server too or not!

@demofox Well, that would probably affect your answer, right?

@phonner I'm able to follow some political accounts that have moved from Twitter to Threads. I've only really searched for politics and sports accounts though. Need to do a more exhaustive search sometime. I typically only use social media for information purposes anyways, so the Threads expansion has been positive for me.

@erc_bk I do miss some sports accounts! Not so much the politics. Thanks!

@phonner I follow a few Threads accounts, and it gives me a, "this federation thing might just actually take off" feeling, even though there's plenty of federation happening without Threads.

@raymondjohnson @phonner I’m also on a blocking server. I hope that changes!

@phonner Not fundamentally, but I do follow a few Threads accounts. Still waiting for EU accounts. 😡

@kallekn @phonner Some EU accounts are here, like @EUCommission and @REA . To be honest I'm not sure what the rest of the EU is doing. I'm glad there is engagement with Fedi to some extent but I guess each part of the EU does its own thing?

@soaproot @phonner I'm not talking about EU institutions. I'd like to follow some ordinary Threads accounts from EU countries, but they can't turn on federation, because Threads doesn't allow that for some reason. And in any case Threads users can't see answers from Mastodon, so that kind of sucks.

@kallekn @phonner Ah OK now I understand you better. I think you are more up to date than I am about exactly what works in the EU (I guess this is some combination of EU regulations and Meta's own choices but I'm a bit fuzzy too on details). Threads users have a limited ability to see replies (starting somewhat recently) but the key word there is limited.

@soaproot @kallekn
We are here! Check out other Commission services on: ec.social-network.europa.eu

@REA @kallekn According to that page there are 9 active accounts but browsing the local feed I only found the two I mentioned plus @EC_DIGIT . I don't know if there is an easy way to find the other 6 and whether they are posting (just less frequently) or not.

@phonner No because Threads blocked me themselves.

@phonner I follow a few Threads accounts but between the limited feature set, all the Threads accounts which don't federate, and probably other factors I'm not thinking to mention, it hasn't affected my experience much. Before it happened, I wondered whether Threads federating would have some big effect either for good or for ill, but as far as I'm aware so far, much closer to a shrug emoji.

@phonner Mine has gone up! I am seeing more celebrities & political leaders embrace the #Fediverse which is encouraging (even if it is on #Threads).
