Jon Sterling

Someone should make a browser like "The Old Safari", where there is a damn titlebar that shows the whole title of the website. I am so tired of these "compact" layouts that are completely unnecessary on today's high density displays.

@jonmsterling They have kind of backed themselves into a corner with the latest Mac OS redesign. Toolbars and title bars got approximately 30 % taller in Big Sur because the monochrome buttons that don’t look like buttons need to bathe in acres of whitespace, apparently… so now even the “compact” layouts are much bigger than they used to be.

I’m so ready for a Mac OS redesign that lets me actually use all that screen real estate I have.

@tuomas_h It is so weird, because it seems to be just a ripoff of GNOME, whose recent designs have been influenced by a quixotic project to unify GNOME’s desktop UI with a phone/touch interface that basically doesn’t exist or run on any phones… So pointless.

@jonmsterling Yeah, it was a point of speculation as well that they were going to be adding touchscreens to Macs, but four+ years in, nothing like that has happened so I’m gonna file this in the “someone must’ve thought it looked good” bucket.

And now we’re all suffering with huge, cold, lifeless Mac UI with no obvious payoff.

I bet you'd like @kde #Plasma. If only you could run it on that Mac!

@jonmsterling Have you looked at Orion? Based on Safari and it has this handy checkbox in the settings…

@jonathantrott @jonmsterling I think this preference is also in Safari. Settings > Advanced > Smart Search field: √ Show full website address. (confirmed on Safari 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2)

Oddly, this shows the full url for every page *except* when making a “smart search” to your default search engine, in which case it seems to fall back to the search terms only.

@macronisalad @jonathantrott I want the full *title*, not only the full address.

@macronisalad @jonmsterling I particularly loathe the search terms replacing the url…

@jonathantrott What I want is something that shows the full *title* of the site I'm on! In the old days, browsers had titlebar that spanned the full width of the window containing the title. Below this was an address bar that contained the full address. It doesn't seem that Orion can do both of these.

@jonmsterling Also dying for a better back/forward animation. Swiping a *gigantic* page left and right is absolutely comical on a huge screen.

@aaronbushnell @jonmsterling This. Actually the reason why I switched to Firefox (together with Firefox showing the new page earlier. in a slow network even if not all CSS has loaded yet).

@aaronbushnell @jonmsterling I like the animation, when it works. But most of the time it is broken, non-existent or slow.

@jonmsterling For now, Firefox does that.

But based on #Mozilla in 2024, the title bar is likely to just be an AI summary of the URL some time soon.

@tcb Am I missing something? There is no dedicated titlebar in Firefox. The title of the page I'm in is displayed in a tiny tab tile in the tab bar that has eaten the titlebar, and as you can see, only part of the title can be displayed. So is there a setting you are referring to that I have missed?

@jonmsterling You're right! I've been calling the "Address Bar" the "Title Bar" forever, but apparently they're different things. TIL.

Sorry about that!

@JustinW80 @tcb Wow, thank you very much! I could not find this option before, and everyone else who replied to me seemed to not know what a titlebar is. Kudos!

@jonmsterling and then if they do want the compact layout they would press the lozenge button on the top right
