This is a test of what happens when I edit one toot in a thread - which requires deleting it and reposting it. Will it destroy the order of the thread?
Stay tuned... I'll tell you.
(1/n)
Okay, here is the second toot in the thread.
(2/n)
Here is the third toot in the thread.
NOW I HAVE EDITED IT.
Will the fourth toot still be linked to this one, or not! The suspense is unbearable.
(3/n)
Sad but true: the fourth toot in the thread is no longer linked to the third.
MORAL: don't edit a toot in a multi-part thread after you have written the whole thread - unless you're willing to repost all the subsequent parts!
@johncarlosbaez Thanks fo performing this experiment after I wondered and asked about it. You are a true applied mathematical physicist.
@johncarlosbaez boosting this for visibility to the people who can make the desired changes. thanks for doing the good work, sir!
I don't think it is possible to make the desired change, actually.
It may be possible to find a workaround, but ActivityPub doesn't allow to change a post, only to delete it and rewrite it (and for good reasons actually).
@lienrag @johncarlosbaez I meant for them to change the code so this general problem can be repaired, haha
ActivityPub is not code, it's a protocol.
So yes, changing the code is possible, but making it not compliant with the protocol isn't a good idea.
@lienrag @johncarlosbaez i have a loooot to learn about this platform, lmao. thank you!
@johncarlosbaez The latest version of the software apparently has a genuine "Edit" button as opposed to an option to "delete and re-draft".
I don't know what the effect of that will be on threading, but as you say, doing a "delete and re-draft" is effectively deleting the initial toot and thereby orphaning its children, then creating an entirely new toot.
@ColinTheMathmo - I'd love the ability to edit without reposting.
@johncarlosbaez MORAL 2: Tooting is an experimental science :P
