CANPOL, Truth and Reconciliation Day

So fellow settlers, what are doing for Truth and Reconciliation Day (Sep. 30) for those whose employers or provinces have declared it a holiday? Generic paid day off work seems a bit grotesque given the context.

Just read a blurb on the CBC about the local election, and the big deal was the local election (and the floor crossing of one of the candidates). Not mentioned was the fact that all 3 candidates are women. So, progress, maybe?

OMG, it's 2021 and we're having a mistaken-email +reply-all storm at work. Not sure if people didn't use email pre-covid, or what happened...

university bureaucracy. IT "service".

So my genius employers replaced the emergency notification system on campus with a new system that only sends email by default (I previously had signed up for SMS notification). Today there was a threat apparently serious enough to evacuate 4 campuses of two universities, and I only found out by word of mouth. As it happens, I was in my office recovering from other bad IT decisions and unable to read email. Also, email is not real-time communication.

🤦‍♂️, police, diversity and inclusion.

My hometown just hired a white male ex-cop to be the "inclusive program manager".

I cropped it a bit because I could not get as close as I wanted without stomping in the flower bed. I'm not sure what kind of Bumblebee, it looked a bit like the yellow faced bumblebee identified at

Trying to learn how to shoot macro hand-held. Found a little bee, doing their stuff. Lots of pollination going on, go little bee.

USPOL, CANPOL, cringe

Whatever you think of the current choices in the Canadian election, Justin Trudeau stealing the "build back better" slogan from the Biden campaign is cringe-worthy.

What is a good replacement for Osmand (Open Street Map client on android)

Now playing: Beats Antique. Thanks to Bandcamp Friday and (I think?) @loke.

That feeling when it takes 62 pings for a remote server to reboot 😅

mailman3, rant

On what planet is "write a python program to generate REST requests" a reasonable answer to "How do I moderate my mailman3 list from the command line"? I was expecting a tool, not a weird framework for writing tools to manage mailing lists.

Edgelord BS, swearing.

<hatter> Vaccines are dangerous
<wowser13> so are feminists

Remember kids, being an asshole ironically is still being an asshole.

Someone on fedi recommended the podcast [The strange case of the Starship Iris]( It has held my interest for 5 or 6 episodes, so thanks for the tip whoever you are. Although the setting is a bit more dystopian, it has a similar feel to the Becky Chambers Wayfarer series. I'm not a parent, but it seems ok for kids able to copy with a few non-player-characters dying. No sex so far, but some romance. Queer and trans characters shown positively (says the cis-het guy).

SPORTSBALL, Captain Obvious.

Can I just say that this whole Olympics-during-pandemic thing is a really bad idea?

Basically the income stream of the IOC is more important than the lives of my friends in Tokyo, and that sucks.

The Linux Foundation are carrying out a survey on "Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in Open Source", and I know this is something #foss #freesoftware and #opensource people (and opponents thereof!) on the Fedi have opinions on. So please boost and fill in.

Contributing to an evidence base may be a way of highlighting the problems and shaming people with money into doing something about them.

Baltimore Museum of Art will present an exhibition of works selected by members of the security team, workers who spend more time amidst the collection than anyone else:

How do you abbreviate s-expression, which is itself an abbreviation for "symbolic expression"?
