Profanity, Freenode.

You have got to be fucking kidding me.

% host irc.libera.net
irc.libera.net is an alias for chat.freenode.net.
chat.freenode.net has address 104.237.198.130
chat.freenode.net has address 64.44.40.114
chat.freenode.net has address 54.37.136.225

Very funny.

Profanity, Freenode.

@bremner Anyone could have registered libera.net. Is there any proof Freenode did it?

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire Short answer: yes. Long answer:

openssl s_client -connect chat.freenode.net:6697 </dev/null 2>/dev/null | openssl x509 -noout -text | grep DNS: | sed 's/DNS:/\n/g' | grep libera

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire To expand, whoever controls the TLS certificate for chat.freenode.net added an alternate name for irc.libera.net, so that TLS connections to irc.libera.net would forward to chat.freenode.net without complaining.

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire @bremner They could not have done this without cooperation from a CA.

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire @bremner Oh, libera.net, not libera.chat, so they’re typosquatting.

Fuckers.

Profanity, Freenode.

@wire @bremner My guess is that they’re doing this as a deliberate troll, because they know people like us will flip out about it and make ourselves look fanatical to the more moderate tech folks who are on the fence about whether they should care. Because it’s not like making some people accidentally end up on Freenode is going to have much impact.

explaining the scam

the actual Libera server is irc.libera.chat, not irc.libera.net

Profanity, Freenode.

@bremner Is time for trademark lawsuits.

re: Profanity, Freenode.

@bremner lmao of course they'd set up a lookalike

wonder if a UDRP complaint would go anywhere
