RIP Quincy Jones.
Legendary music producer behind hits from Sinatra to Michael Jackson.
I know I'm alone in this, but I think "Billie Jean" was a more iconic and transformative Quincy Jones song than "Thriller." First time we saw the Michael Jackson moonwalk!
Never really thought to compare the two songs, but now I'm thinking about it, I think I'd agree. That main riff underpinning Billie Jean is a top combo of bassline groove & chord-tension, & the overall musical shape of "different bit & then back to the riff" never misses. And it's catchy: I've sung bits of that round the house in odd moments even though I'm not specially an MJ fan.
Thriller had an amazing video, & I think that's partly what made it such a "cultural event".
@unchartedworlds @mekkaokereke let's not forget the fantastic drumming of Ndugu Chancler that starts the song and by which we recognize ot at once!
