Another afternoon of protesting the announced budget cut of 1 billion (yes, 9 zeros) euro on higher education in the Netherlands. Due to circumstances, I could not make this protest, but my fabulous colleagues at TU Delft kindly shared some pics with me and gave me permission to share them with you.

Pics by Alex Neagu.

To put the budget cuts in perspective: it's a billion euros *per year*. The amount is the equivalent of closing an entire university. Combined with inflation and higher energy prices, universities are seeing a cut in their budgets of up to 10%.

Dr. Anna Latour

On Monday morning, our minister of education, Eppo Bruins, announced that despite the budget cuts, "we can still do a lot", and that the cabinet is investing 17.6 million euro in biotechnology.

I am also excited about the projects that will get funded by that money, but obviously 17.6 euros is nothing compared to 1 billion.

Yeah... also: What I'm really worried about is the part of education (not just research) that isn't hot right now, and the parts that are not immediately economically relevant but help us be better humans.

Humanities. Arts, sociology, philosophy...
Aerospace is going to be fine because we'll be showered with military research money. I don't want that money. I want academic freedom, and I want everyone to learn what they can about all that matters to us as humans.
