@ackthrice I mean, diplomacy is also interesting in this context.

@ackthrice not diplomacy. Sorry. The game I meant was democracy. I think I played democracy 3. Diplomacy is an old board game.

@ackthrice have you played diplomacy? I can imagine a similar sort of abstract ish game where you manage conflicts among the components of your civilisation...

@ackthrice @nicol I don't want to sound like a European empires apologist, but I think part of the reason European empires managed to be so uniquely awful was their technological advantage, rather than some innate European shittiness. Like, some central American empires managed to be pretty cruel within the confines of their technological abilities...

@ackthrice so many games revolve around war and conquest that I'm wondering what mechanics would a non-colonial civ building would involve.

civilisation 5 (or 6?) has a sort of culture mechanic that might be a model? Though maybe this is just imperialism in a different mode...

@SylviaFysica probably 100, but I won't know until someone makes the offer...

@ackthrice totally agree. But what you want is a game about building a civilisation without colonialism and empire, and what I'm pointing out is that there little historical precedent for that anywhere in the world (that I know of).

It would be interesting to imagine what such a game would be like though...

@ackthrice empire isn't synonymous with European either. Civilisation is a slippery concept, but pretty much all civilisations I can think of did some sort of empire building...

@cspannagel do you have some science based evidence for that claim?

@Riedler OK. A big ol' melee is going to be hard to televise live. You're going to need a bunch of camera operators and some real experienced live TV directors. Are we talking cage match or like a massive open field?

@Riedler is it like a free for all or are we doing a bracket?

@ackthrice got some bad new for you regarding what's involved in building a civilisation...

Cast John de Lancie as Q in the next bond movie you cowards

a question for tech people, web hosting, boost ok

@tsunderdog @zoec +1. I've been using NFS since 2005 for a few small sites and they've been fine and cheap.

Oh great, I'm so pleased this game implemented a keyboard themselves rather than using the console's keyboard, said no gamer ever.
