Why is lowercase omega the symbol for frequency? Is it because it looks a little like a wave?

@JordiGH A quick search doesn't give any useful results; it would be interesting to do some archaeology and see where it appears first.

My guess would be one of the following:

- it was available and unused at the time;
- it has to do with oscillations, and omega transliterates into "o".
