bitbucket, Mercurial

While I'm not at all surprised that Bitbucket finally is purging , I'm still sad.

@JordiGH it's such a hostile mood. I tweeted about it but i should toot about it too.

Every other hosting platform either made the repos read-only or converted mercurial to git.

@vickysteeves Oh, I didn't know you cared!

I can only hope that this may be the final drive to push us towards a better hosting service. Maybe Heptapod will finally come of age.

@JordiGH I have a funded project about preserving scholarship in these platforms (investigating-archiving-git.gi) :) tho it is git focused, this is troubling from a general archiving software perspective (which I care about a lot!)

bitbucket, Mercurial

@vickysteeves Ah, so it's not hg you care about so much as preservation?

bitbucket, Mercurial

@JordiGH what is HG?

I care that a company is being a bad-faith actor, too. Efff that noise!

bitbucket, Mercurial

@vickysteeves Hg, chemical symbol for mercury, thus the abbreviation for Mercurial.

@JordiGH I was surprised that there was no reaction from you about this important event for an entire two days.

Now my world is back to normal.

(I used Mercurial with Bitbucket when a friend added me to his project. I liked it well enough. Other than that, I have no strong opinion on DVCS, except perhaps that the Git monoculture is quite likely not a good thing...)

@JordiGH I guess I should be happy that, back when I was choosing which version control software to go with, I (for once) avoided my usual instinct to go with the less-popular but more-elegant solution (Mercurial) and ended up with git instead. But I'm not. This news makes me sad. Diversity of solutions is healthy; monoculture is not.

@11011110 To be honest, I mostly chose Mercurial because Sagemath and Octave were using it.

re: bitbucket, Mercurial

@JordiGH is there still one decent web platform for mercurial out there :/ ?

re: bitbucket, Mercurial

@bram It seems like sr.ht is the most promising contender, if you like @sir 's stuff.
