@JordiGH Like, going online without using a phone/app? I'm pretty sure every bank does that, assuming I'm understanding the question correctly.
@ink_slinger Without requiring a phone for 2FA (those texty codes for logging in). Most places that implement 2FA make it optional.
Weirdly enough, half of my bank does make it optional but the other half (the insurance part) apparently does not. I don't even get why those are two separate logins, which apparently are connected to each other, since one login works in the other, but the insurance side then asks me for a phone to log in.
@JordiGH Oh, weird. None of my banks have 2FA on by default. I'm not even sure it's an option, to be honest.
@ink_slinger So, any one bank that you're particularly happy with? I've never liked TD much.
@JordiGH Most of my stuff is with Scotia, which is pretty decent. Our mortgage is with TD because they had the best rate and Scotia wouldn't match it (we later tried to move it to Scotia when it was up for renewal, but they screwed up the paperwork).
I was with RBC for decades, but feel like the customer service got worse over the years, so I guess this is a long way of saying Scotia is the best major bank I've dealt with. Never dealt with CIBC.
@ink_slinger Well, TD is the one I'm currently unhappy with. Will try Scotia.
@767 I am anxious even about being triangulated by a dumb phone, especially since those are full of secret, obfuscated software, even dumb phones. The only way to turn tracking off is to take out the phone batter, I think.
@767 I actually have one like that at work in the office, which never leaves the office, and has no SIM card because at the time I thought that was the only way to do TOTP.
@767 I've since discovered that if you can get the hash for TOTP, oathtool can generate the TOTP. Yay! I use that for other websites now. But the bank didn't want to do TOTP, but to send codes over SMS which would require a SIM card.
@767 Er, not the hash, the secret. The (first six decimal digits of) hash is the output of TOTP, using the secret.
@767 It was fun to actually understand how TOTP works. It's not that l33t, actually. I may just be making it sound more complicated than it is.
@JordiGH wait your bank is named after the villains in Deep Space Nine? that's a bit on-the-nose.
