Yesterday I could see a small in the general direction of the sunset coming through the clouds, but only through my sunglasses. It just looked like a bright cloud without my sunglasses. I asked a passerby also wearing sunglasses if he could see it and he said, naw man, it's just your sunglasses.

Yay, I have magical rainbow-tinted sunglasses.

@JordiGH polarized lenses? I haven't read much about sky polarization being frequency dependent but intuitively it seems like that should happen sometimes.

@mcmoots I don't think so? Maybe? I think I could see a faint rainbow without the sunglasses, just that it was hard to see because the cloud it was shining through was so bright.

@JordiGH Regular rainbows happen with the Sun behind you, so it would be unlikely to see one in the direction of the sunset.

@ColinTheMathmo I think the cloud was acting as the prism.

@JordiGH There other rainbow structures, but they are rarely seen. In short, hard to say exactly what it was without more information, and it's not clear it would help.

@JordiGH ... or that it would be especially interesting.

Yup also called a sundog - and they're somewhat polarized so glasses changing visibility makes sense.
