I want a or Metroid-like game that doesn't involve shooting up all the local wildlife.

Yeah, an adventuring space-faring xenobiologist, does this exist?

@akkartik Ooh, is it a web-based game?

@JordiGH Yeah. Plot wasn't very strong, as I recall. But it was cool controlling your very own rover on an alien planet. With life.

On the topic of being an adventuring xenobiologist, my dad was almost that, in a way. He was the first human to scuba dive in the Mexican Caribbean in the 1950s using an Aqualung he purchased from Cousteau. Unexplored ocean floors can be about as alien as another planets.

Curiously enough, in order to catalogue marine wildlife, he and Ramón Bravo ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram%C3%B ) used to harpoon a lot of fish at first. Years later they later deeply regretted doing that.

@JordiGH Yeah, Star Trek's prime directive of not interfering with alien life wouldn't become effective until much later in 1966 when the TV series first aired, and the concepts it advanced became part of pop culture.

@JordiGH Prime Directive.

I'm not a trekkie, but a few ideas and themes explored there in the 60s became highly influential.

@h And yet, Samus Aran still shoots up all of these critters that are just trying to defend their homes.

@JordiGH There will always be insensitive people out there.

@kensanata Huh, so is that what that game is about? I was already curious about it because Anita Sarkeesian recommended it. Double huh, it's by Ubisoft? I didn't think they made any game I would like.

@JordiGH It's an action adventure where you play a journalist so you need to get to places and take pictures in order to accomplish missions. As you travel, you can also take pictures of the local fauna. There's knocking out guards and jumping over lasers, too, but I remember the beginning of the game as being beautifully pacifist. And I loved taking pictures of the fauna.

@kensanata Sounds fun! I'll see if I can get a copy.
