@ColinTheMathmo What a fun read! I had planned to solve a game of this nature as the final part of the impartial games post, after covering Nim-sums and Sprague–Grundy theorem/function (which you introduce really well). Great stuff!

I think it gets a bit inaccessible for the less technical reader in the middle, hence the desire to re-write is somewhat. But we'll see if/when I get the time.
