After your comment about the thread getting long, I find this visualisation helps.
@josias Some people hate it, and when threads get too long it doesn't really help, but certainly for long threads we really need better navigation tools.
It would also be nice to have a way to draw threads together, but there's a difference between "chat" and "discussion".
I've written a discussion tool that works like this ... it has limitations, but has proven very, very useful.
