@esoterica There is a very strong visual resemblance between the figures of the function in this survey (e.g. Fig.3) and the figures in Mallows' paper on Conway's $10,000 sequence, jstor.org/stable/2324028 (e.g. Fig.1), but little or no overlap in references. Maybe someone knows of an explanation for the similarity?
